Scholastic Book Orders
We are going to start Scholastic Book Orders this month. I will be sending home information in your child's folder tomorrow. If you would like to order books online, I have a link on the blog. Our classroom activation code is HCVH2. This is a great opportunity to get good books for a very reasonable price. Happy reading!

100th Day of School
It is looking like our 100th Day of School will be on Tuesday, February 8th. If we miss school due to snow days it will be pushed back however many snow days we miss. I am looking forward to seeing what the kids bring in to share!

What's New!?!
We had another short week this week. A lot of the things I had planned for this past week will carry over to next week.
Math:
• Writing Number Sentences for Subtraction
• Reviewing 2D/3D shapes
• Counting to 100
Kidwriting:
• Writing in booklets
• Telling the beginning, middle, and end in their writing
• Using details in their writing
Literacy:
• Comparing and contrasting characters in a story
Science:
• Objects that sink or float
Bits of Information
I sent home a packet of Math ideas you can work on at home. You are in no way obligated to work on these things at home, but I thought it might be helpful.
I’m looking in to how many make up days we will have because of all the snow. It looks like even more is coming. I will let you all know as soon as I find out.
I recently sent home a letter about the 100th day of school. Please, start working on gathering your 100 items from home. Remember they must fit in a gallon size ziplock bag. I will send something home as soon as I know when our 100th day of school actually will be!
Box top Challenge: We are going to have a school wide box top challenge for the month of February. The kindergarten and preschool (AM/PM) classrooms that collect the most box tops will win a popcorn party or cookie party. The monies collected will go towards the purchasing of new equipment for our school. Please check your child's backpack for a collection sheet. Thanks so much for all your support!
Specials: With all these snow days it's easy to get our Specials schedule mixed up. We never skip a specials, so we will just pick up on whatever day we missed. So, if we were supposed to have Gym on Wednesday and we miss school on Wednesday, then we will have Gym when we get back to school. Sorry if this gets confusing! If you ever have a question, just respond on my blog or send me an email at kristen.mcdowell@jessamine.kyschools.us.

**Homework – Continue doing what you are doing with the homework! I will be sending home a packet with ideas you can do at home to help your child in Math. Be looking for that in your child’s folder sometime next week.

Parent Pick-Up- If you decide to come in the school instead of using the carline to pick up your child from school, you must wait in the cafeteria. We will take our class into the purple area of the cafeteria to meet you. Parent pick-up in the cafeteria starts at 2:25. If you are running behind, your child will be left with other JELV staff in the front of the cafeteria and you will probably have to show them your I.D. before they will let you take them. Our goal is to provide a smooth and safe dismissal, so we greatly appreciate your understanding of this procedure!
Lunch Numbers- Continue practicing your child’s 4-digit lunch number. We are now using it when we go through the lunch line on Thursdays. If you need your child’s number again, please let us know and we will send it home.

January 26- HALF DAY- Early Release- Students will only eat a brunch on this day. So make sure to plan a lunch for them.

What's New!?!
We had another great week! I am so proud of the students. They earned another classroom compliment party and that is why they came home with face paint today!
Math:
• The concept of subtraction
• 2D/3D shapes
• identifying and naming numbers 1-20
Kidwriting:
• writing in booklets
• telling the beginning, middle, and end in their writing
• using details in their writing
Literacy:
• identifying informational texts
• identifying the main idea and supporting details
Bits of Information
**Homework – A lot of the kids are turning their homework in early. Homework is not due until Wednesday of every week. I would encourage you to do only one section of the homework a day. They work so hard at school and we do not want to push them too much. They are loving school and your support at home is helping them in so many ways!
Do you have extra toys that your child doesn't play with very much? If you have any toys that you are thinking of getting rid of, please consider donating them to the classroom. As you know we have a lot of indoor recess days during the winter due to the cold weather and the kiddos are always looking for a variety of things to play with. If you have any gently used toys like legos, cars, games, puzzels, books, or dolls we could use them. Thanks for all of your support and willingness to help out!
Spring Pictures- Please note on your calendar that our Spring Picture Day will be on Tuesday, March 1st. We will take classroom group pictures and full-length individual pictures. Details and forms will be sent home in February.
Warm Clothes- Although we are now in the winter season, we will still go out to recess as much as the weather permits us. Please dress your child in a coat, gloves, and hat every day. Also, please continue to practice zipping coats and tying shoes with your child at home. This independent skill an important one for them to learn before first grade.
Practice your child’s 4 digit lunch number a home so they will be able to punch it in when they go through the lunch line.

Camp Read A Lot
Sorry if the pictures are not very clear, I forgot my camera and had to use a phone. Nonetheless, I hope you can see the fun we had in the Grotto reading our favorite books from home!
Next Family Fun Night
In a letter that was recently sent home it was stated that the next Family Fun Night would be on February 20th. It is actually on January 20th. Please note the change and mark your calendars. It should be tons of fun!

What's New!?!
I have really enjoyed having the kids back this week! I am so proud of how good their behavior has been over such a long break. Next week we will work on using details in our writing. In Math we will start to introduce the concept of subtraction and continue working on 2D and 3D shapes. In Literacy we will be using informational texts to learn about arctic animals. Students will be challenged to identify the main idea and details from the stories we read.
Things you can work on at Home: In addition to homework here are some following activities you can complete if you wish:
• Continue to work on a few popcorn words a week. Remember the goal is to get at least that first list by the end of the year!
• Ask students the different ways you can add to get to 10. Challenge them to write a number sentence to represent that way!
• Practice counting to 100. (A lot are getting stuck at the 10’s- i.e. 68, 69… 70)
• Have your child practice writing his/her last name. The first letter needs to be capital and all the rest lowercase.
Bits of Information
I hope you all are finding my blog helpful. If you have not checked it out, I would encourage you to do so. Information usually gets posted on there first along with pictures from our classroom.

**Homework – Do not forget that Homework will be sent home on Fridays and be returned on Wednesdays. Make sure to read over the homework page as they have changed.
We are quickly coming into flu season. Please encourage your child to wash their hands frequently and review how to cough in their arm. If your child is running a fever, it is best if they stay home so they can get better and not spread germs.
Because of all the snow days the 2nd Nine Weeks did not end until today (Friday the 7th). Your child’s report card will be sent home on Thursday, January 13th.
If you would like to come in and volunteer in the class we would love to have you. The students always enjoy seeing other adults in the classroom and we enjoy the extra set of helping hands! If you let me know in advance, then I can make sure to have things ready for you. You can also come in and read a book to the students if you would like!

Camp Read A Lot Rescheduled
Since we had so many snow days during that last week before the break, we had to cancel Camp Read A Lot. I have now rescheduled it for this Friday, January 7. Your child may wear their pajamas on this day. They can also bring their favorite book, a small blanket and a flashlight from home. Whatever they bring must be small enough to fit in a grocery bag or their backpack. I look forward to spending time with your kids letting them share all about their favorite books from home!
